Admiral? I'd like to ask a few questions.

First, I'd like to know more about the system here. Are you accountable to anyone else? Is there any process in place to prevent or correct possible errors?

Second, is there any way for inmates to appeal their term here?

Third - I realise I'm not Daro'Xen's Warden, but she has no one else to speak for her. I'd like to know why she's been taken as an Inmate.

I can understand why certain people have their abilities suppressed. For example, there's one inmate here who got his powers back during a port and used them to kill dozens of innocent people, and there are some people on board who don't know how to control their abilities, which runs the risk of hurting themselves as well as others, so introducing them gradually to give them time to learn how to control them makes the process a little smoother. But for those who do have control and know better than to use their gifts as a weapon, I honestly don't see the point in keeping them away from what's rightfully theirs.

Some inmates are inmates because they don't understand the sanctity of life and murder without hesitation. While such thing is possible without additional abilities, it's significantly more difficult to end a life with your bare hands than with your telekinesis that can lift tons, for example. As from what I've seen so far, it's not in the admiral's nature to go on a case-by-case basis.

Because the humans have the odds stacked against them enough without worrying about those who are stronger, faster or can bend the laws of physics.

Before anyone accuses me of close mindedness, I have had my abilities suppressed and while I don't appreciate being turned human every other port, I can't ignore the implications that having abilities has on people who don't have them. How that makes them feel afraid when they're here, lost and alone and in a place that they couldn't imagine existing. That's a very isolating, frightening place to be.

It's a safety measure, one of few in place. Considering the party line is that a lot of 'em are here 'cause they're murdering, evil assholes, seems like pretty much the only good idea ever.

Not all wardens are equipped to handle people with super-special powers. Perhaps it evens the playing field a bit, and makes things a tiny bit safer for those of us who aren't gifted or whatever.

It's a matter of security. In any normal prison the criminals would be cuffed and caged. The most dangerous ones rendered immobile in pods or time loops. Merely having their abilities limited and otherwise given near-total freedom is quite lenient. Foolishly lenient, given how many murders there are here even with the inmates' abilities suppressed.

It honestly depends on the person to me.

I knew a human that had to be kept in a containment chamber because so much as giving him a small handheld game gave him the means to build an escape device and threaten a population as soon as he was out. If he were here? Until I knew he would figure out that was useless? I'd recommend the same thing.

[Fuck he doesn't want to consider the idea of that guy ever being here. Also private because that connects to a larger story he does not want to share with people.]

My position is that it's fairer to allow everyone to have their abilities in full, but there is a point at which that becomes disproportionately unfair to everyone else on board, if the Inmate in question is here partly for acts of unmotivated or unpredictable violence committed using their abilities.

Because of that, personally I don't restrict my Inmates' abilities unless they've made it obvious that the immediate threat posed to the ship or the crew is so great that it outweighs the damage done to the Inmate by their being restricted. And what I definitely won't do is hold an Inmate's abilities over their head as reward or punishment. I would consider that unreasonable to the point of cruelty.

My policy is, unless an inmate has proven themselves to be a danger to others they can't earn your trust if you don't give them a chance. That doesn't mean you have to give them all their powers, but that's how I look at it when I'm assigned an inmate with powers.

If the abilities potentially threaten group cohesion, it is typically up to the warden's discretion how they are dealt with. In our present system, however, true uniform equality is not achievable.

I think it is often necessary for the safety of the other residents! Some inmates can be trusted to use their abilities responsibly, but that is up to the discretion of their warden and their progress in rehabilitation!
