[Private to the Admiral]

[Jean's gaze is carefully even, her voice steady and strong. She's clearly been practising.]

Admiral? I'd like to ask a few questions.

First, I'd like to know more about the system here. Are you accountable to anyone else? Is there any process in place to prevent or correct possible errors?

Second, is there any way for inmates to appeal their term here?

Third - I realise I'm not Daro'Xen's Warden, but she has no one else to speak for her. I'd like to know why she's been taken as an Inmate.

[Warden Filter]

I'd like to know everyone's position on Inmates having their abilities suppressed.

[Public]

[A bit later on, here is a distinctly irritated Jean, holding a gingerbread Barge.]

I bet the Admiral thinks he's cute, doesn't he.

I can understand why certain people have their abilities suppressed. For example, there's one inmate here who got his powers back during a port and used them to kill dozens of innocent people, and there are some people on board who don't know how to control their abilities, which runs the risk of hurting themselves as well as others, so introducing them gradually to give them time to learn how to control them makes the process a little smoother. But for those who do have control and know better than to use their gifts as a weapon, I honestly don't see the point in keeping them away from what's rightfully theirs.

[... Which is probably more or less what you expected to hear from him, hopefully so maybe weighing in wasn't necessary but.]

Like any other Inmate, the reasons behind Admiral Daro'Xen's being here will be made clear in her file, which will provided to her Warden.

Some inmates are inmates because they don't understand the sanctity of life and murder without hesitation. While such thing is possible without additional abilities, it's significantly more difficult to end a life with your bare hands than with your telekinesis that can lift tons, for example. As from what I've seen so far, it's not in the admiral's nature to go on a case-by-case basis.

I doubt that, but I don't expect that to stop you from trying.

[Oh, did you have other questions? Never mind. Have a model of the Barge made of gingerbread instead.

Welcome to the Barge, Jean!]

That's usually the case.

It's a safety issue, for some. Whether or not people are comfortable with what we're capable of doing doesn't much matter when you're dealing with a being like the Admiral, and a fair amount of people here are from worlds where abilities aren't unusual.

I feel that it should be handled on a case by case basis. If a dangerous inmate arrives with full power, there's a very real chance people will get hurt, especially considering that happens enough with the human inmates when they first arrive on board, but in the case of someone like Erik or Wanda, who know better than that, not having their abilities just adds insult to injury.

Because the humans have the odds stacked against them enough without worrying about those who are stronger, faster or can bend the laws of physics.

Before anyone accuses me of close mindedness, I have had my abilities suppressed and while I don't appreciate being turned human every other port, I can't ignore the implications that having abilities has on people who don't have them. How that makes them feel afraid when they're here, lost and alone and in a place that they couldn't imagine existing. That's a very isolating, frightening place to be.

It's a safety measure, one of few in place. Considering the party line is that a lot of 'em are here 'cause they're murdering, evil assholes, seems like pretty much the only good idea ever.

[He's too flippant about it, though; or maybe that's just him 'cause he's smirking, now.]

Not all wardens are equipped to handle people with super-special powers. Perhaps it evens the playing field a bit, and makes things a tiny bit safer for those of us who aren't gifted or whatever.

[Very flatly.]

Your assertion is that suppression of inmates' abilities should take place because humans are so small-minded and weak that otherwise we would be living in constant terror of crewmates with supernatural abilities - and furthermore that we are literally incapable of comprehending the Barge itself, something that dozens of us, Inmate and Warden alike, have managed without issue every day of our being here.

With all due respect, [none,] that is faulty reasoning.

No one ever said they were, honey. But you heard about how it just takes one bad apple?

Well, it just takes one murdering psychopath with a huge advantage to level the whole damn orchard. I think they call that counterproductive.

It's a matter of security. In any normal prison the criminals would be cuffed and caged. The most dangerous ones rendered immobile in pods or time loops. Merely having their abilities limited and otherwise given near-total freedom is quite lenient. Foolishly lenient, given how many murders there are here even with the inmates' abilities suppressed.

[Although Narvin makes a fuss when it's *his* powers taken away.]

That'd be outright favoritism, Jean. He only likes to do that once everyone's on board.
