17 - Video

[Some might not recognise the woman on the network. Her face is obscured by a flaring gold mask. She's wearing a green skirt, complete with a gold belt and matching gloves. Her composure, too, is different; she holds herself with a quiet confidence.

Her voice, though, is as warm as it's always been.]

Hey, Barge.

[Jean pulls the mask from her face, revealing an older, wearier gaze.]

How long was I gone? What did I miss?

[Private to X-People]

[Her smile falters, a little, as she leans forward.]

Please tell me you're all okay.

[Filter to Bruce Wayne]

[A cheerful wave.] Hey! How are you? I've learned a ton, we should spar in the CES. [And catch up, but that's what 'spar' means.]

[Private to Morgana]

[Jean suddenly looks younger; bashful and uncertain.]

I got you those books. And - um, I didn't know your size, exactly, but...

I missed you too. I'm doing okay.

[Despite the Bruce thing. Which he can't quite . . . bring himself to bring up yet. But soon.]

How long have you been gone? [Because it seems like a lot's happened, just looking at her face.]

Um...about two years. [She hadn't meant to stay away that long, but - Annie was there, and she was in university, and then Scott told her how he felt, and then Xavier was honing her powers, and then - ] It was easy to get caught up in - you know, life.

[A small, soft smile.] But I never forgot. Thinking of you guys - it's helped me through a lot.

Yeah. No, I know. Things were going okay, then? [Well, he hopes. Amazingly, ideally.]

Um...for the most part. Everyone's in one piece. [Except she's the only one who knows that and for a moment the strain shows on her face.] We've had some close calls, but if we didn't it'd probably mean we were stuck in a dreamscape somewhere.

[He frowns slightly when he notices that - he hasn't lost how she looks not just tired but pretty exhausted. Worried. Which just makes him worry.]

I think we're about the same, here.

Jean, you - should know that Bruce went home.

[Jean can't answer, for a moment. She's just staring.

She thought about him, too. About everything she'd show him. About rare smiles and silent laughter and awkward hugs. She'd been working on her chess skills - ]

I...

[Deep breath, Jean.]

I guess I should have - I mean, with Jason gone. [And they're together, and that's good, they can be happy.]

He's doing okay. I talked to him, after he left.

I know it's . . . rough. It'll be rough, without him. But he's okay.

[Alex is proud of him.]

He left me something to give to you.

[Jean's nod is a little too quick, a little too earnest, but she means it all the same.] Yeah, he - he was in a good place. Thanks to you.

[Again, her eyes go wide, but it's a gentler shock.] Really?

Thanks to all of us, I think.

[He grins.] Yep. You remember where my cabin is?

[Jean grins back.] 'Course I do.

[As she stands, almost casually.] Ever since I went full-fledged telepath my memory's been pretty much perfect.

Cool. Drop by whenever, then. I've been keeping it for you.

['Cause he knew you were coming back okay.]

[Her smile softens; she's clearly touched. He never lost faith in her.]

I'll be there soon.

[And it's not so very long after that she's knocking at his door.]
